The CNY season is approaching. This, to me, is a bittersweet time. There are things that I love and hate, about CNY, which are amplified in my now extra busy schedule, and worries. Definitely, however, one thing remains, and that is that CNY is my favourite holiday of the year.
Good thing 1: Got time to study
As we all know, undergrad life is very busy. So busy, in fact, that we usually dun have time to study. In fact, in general we do not have time to study! Therefore, the CNY period acts as a mini recess week for us to catch up on our work. You may think that studying during CNY is no life, but honestly, would you rather be studying or entertaining your relatives with all those irritating traffic lights questions? I rather study my notes, then at least, during sem time I have more time to do more important things.
Good thing 2: A loooooong break
The longest holiday, perfect for a good long meetup with old friends, anywhere, anytime. Things are so much easier with more time to yourself.
Good thing 3: Long lost relatives
A great time to meet up with the cousins, see how much they have grown, play dota with them, etc.
Good thing 4: Food
Yeah, we all love CNY food.
Trouble 1: Traffic Lights
One of the most irritating things about visiting relatives is that for every family, usually there exists a relative or two who will ask you all sorts of sensitive questions for every year every traffic light status you are in. I know I sound like talking about maths, with all the "for every" and all the "there exist" but it is true!
Really this is ji irritating, kan irritating, whatever word you want to use! Those who are green they ask when you are going red. Otherwise, those who are green they ask you whether there is anyone you are interested in. Those who are yellow they ask everything about the yellow person. Those who are red they ask you when you are getting married. This is like what the fuck!!
Tell them, yeah, and risk them firstly gossiping to all the relatives, and secondly risking all sorts of opposition. This is Xiaolongnu Traffic Lights Theorem. It says that you must never discuss traffic lights with anyone from an elder generation.
Trouble 2: Talk for the sake of talking
Even worse than traffic lights, if that is even possible, is small talk for the sake of making small talk. Something that I really hate are those questions that they ask just to strike a conversation. Talk about trying too hard! I mean if there is nothing to talk about then there is nothing lah! If there is silence then there is silence lah! What is wrong with silence? Why do they find silence awkward?
